“Institute of Criminal Justice Studies (ICJS), University of Portsmouth and security recruitment consultancy ‘HJA Fire and Security’ have announced that HJA Director Mike Hurst would contribute to the forthcoming student induction programme in September 2011.

Mike would be working with the Institute to provide advice to its distance-learning student into areas such as career progression, sourcing job opportunities, CV preparation, personal branding etc.

The recruitment advice would cover the domains of electronic/ physical security, IS security and corporate security functions.

Top 3 most common CV mistakes by senior executives, reveals InterExec report

A new report compiled by InterExec has revealed the top three most common mistakes made by senior executives on their CV, according to headhunters, with executives apparently not selling themselves enough on their accomplishments.

Being duties-driven rather than accomplishments-driven; having a CV too long; and putting in irrelevant information have all made it to the top of the poll. In addition, the number of headhunters that said using too much jargon and lack of attention to detail were common mistakes on the CV was also significant.

The report, which was conducted by InterExec, the Confidential Agent that represents senior executives seeking positions paying £200,000 to £1m+, surveyed 100 of the top senior executive headhunters across the UK.

The headhunters were asked ‘what are the top three most common mistakes made by senior executives on their CVs’:

Duties-driven rather than accomplishments-driven – 63%
CV length too long – 54%
Irrelevant information – 51%
Too much jargon / abbreviations – 35%
Lack of attention to detail – 25%
Lack of depth – 24%
CV is skewed when sent as an email attachment – 11%
Being overly arrogant – 10%
Incorrect information – 2%

Kit Scott-Brown, managing director of InterExec, commented: “Getting your CV absolutely right is key to getting recruited into the top roles. The resumé is typically the first point of contact between the executive and the prospective employer, so it is incredibly important that it outlines the key skills and achievements clearly and to the point. Composing a CV is the first hurdle to jump before getting recruited, but many senior executives still get it wrong, which is why we are here to help.”

Highlights

v Almost 90% of companies surveyed were quite or very optimistic.

v Only 1 company in 8 feel business will deteriorate in 2011.

v Almost a half of companies plan to increase Sales and Marketing activity.

v Over one third of companies looking to increase staff levels; only 9% looking to decrease.

v Still downward pressure on salaries, with 45% looking to reduce salaries. However 34% will be looking to increase salaries of key staff.

v Slowness of customer decision making is still the biggest factor holding business back.

The short online survey, which is only a snapshot, was over about 200 companies covering a range of areas in the fire and security industry.

This is the third time that we have run this survey and again the results back up the anecdotal evidence we have been hearing from clients, candidates and industry colleagues.

Since the middle of 2010 there has been a marked interest in recruitment amongst our clients. Whilst recruitment activity has not reached pre–recession levels, the indications are that companies are becoming more confident and happier to invest in the future by filling long-vacant positions and recruiting individuals for new, carefully targeted positions.

There was a clear overall dip in confidence from the initial survey in April 2009 and the second in November 2010. However, looking as a whole this dip has, largely, been reversed.

Only time will tell if the survey results match the facts – watch this space.

The on-line survey was compiled between November and December 2010, by HJA Fire and Security Director, Mike Hurst using the Survey Monkey site.

HJA have since 1992, specialised exclusively in permanent recruitment for the fire and security industry and cover a wide spectrum of market sectors. Roles recruited for tend to range from executive level through to senior management.

A qualification in electronics/electronic design “HNC or HND”, or someone who has been working in a similar environment with 3 to 5 years industry experience. Ideally this experience would be gained in the fire or security sector.

Good understanding of AutoCAD, ideally the 3D or similar package. Mechanical design is required as part of the role, an understanding of plastics moulding and design is required.

Experience with using a PCB layout software package such as Altium, PCAD, and Protel etc. PCB design and layout experience is a must, along with Gerber file and BOM knowledge.

Experience in producing work instruction, producing bill of materials and document control is required.

Able to work using his/her own initiative. A good great deal of interaction is required with production and the directors so good communication skills are essential.

Working knowledge of C, C++ programming would be a distinct advantage or a general understanding of software is required. Working knowledge of Microchips PIC and Atmel Tiny devices would also be a distinct advantage.

The role would suit a person with suitable industry experience that wishes to progress into a full R&D role and to manage the department on a day to day basis. A good all rounder rather than a specialist in a particular discipline is the basis for the candidate. The position could lead to a senior managerial role within the company. The candidate would need to be able to work on their own using their own initiative, and liaise with the Technical Director, Production Manager and Production Engineer. The candidate would also be required to produce full design documentation and keep project files for each product. Liaising with the appropriate approval bodies would be required for product approval, longer term as part of the role the candidate would be required to represent the company at fire industry working group committees. The candidate would also need to oversee the company technical support desk for general customer technical enquires and to support the company’s internal sales team.

Position would be permanent; salary would be based on experience. All other aspects of the role and any other benefits can be discussed at the time of interview.

1: The Company

Our client is a well established, medium size service company operating in the field of commercial fire protection systems. The company supply, install and maintain a variety of fire safety related systems into a large and diverse client base, including many prestigious customers.
The company operates throughout South East England, with their offices based in West London. The company employs 14 people directly, and utilises a number of sub-contractors. The office accommodates a management / administration / sales team consisting of 8 people. It is a pleasant, open plan office environment where everyone works very much as part of the team.

Office hours are 8.30 to 5.00, although there is a “get the job done” culture which may occasionally require longer working hours.

2: The Role

As Service Manager, you would be responsible for managing the company’s service operation, which accounts for approximately half of the company turnover, the balance coming from system sales and installations. There is a responsibility for meeting customer service level and financial targets.

This involves arranging scheduled maintenance visits to a large number of client sites, organising and managing repair works and operating an emergency call out service. These works are undertaken by our own team of approximately 6 field based service engineers plus various specialist sub contractors. The following is intended to give a brief overview of the primary tasks associated with this role.

Planning / organising scheduled maintenance visits

Processing new / revised maintenance contracts

Managing a team of field based service engineers and specialist contractors, organising workload etc

Reacting to client service requests, dealing with a variety of client issues.

Organising reactive works

Processing a variety of engineers reporting and paperwork

Client liaison in respect of correct procedures (obtaining purchases orders etc)

Maintaining our computerised management systems

Invoicing and Financial Control
This is an important role within the company. Furthermore, the company is a very progressive organisation offering plenty of opportunities for personal advancement for the ambitious individual.

3: The Candidate

The successful candidate will be an ambitious, career minded, hard worked individual that is reliable and capable of working under pressure. The company has a strong customer service ethic that will be reflected by your willingness to go that extra mile. You will have strong customer liaison and man management skills. You will need to be accurate and efficient in carrying out a wide variety of tasks.

Adequate experience in a commercial customer service environment is essential, as is experience of managing people. Experience in the Fire Safety Systems industry is not necessary. Although there is a technical aspect to the business you would be supported by technical specialists within the office. The inevitable “jargon” and a basic understanding of the product can be quickly learned. Management and organisational skills are far more important. The candidate will have good IT skills, with competence in the usual Microsoft Office applications, email, internet, as well as the ability to quickly learn our bespoke management software.

Excellent communication skills both spoken and written are essential.

Fire and Security Sector Confidence Survey - November 2009

In April 2009, we conducted a short Confidence Survey of companies in the UK Fire and Security Sector. In general the results were quite positive although many respondents were quite cautious. We decided to repeat the exercise during November 2009 to see if and how opinions had changed.

The results are listed below, but we have looked closely at the findings, highlighting five we feel are potentially of significance.

In the April survey a total of 73.9% of respondents were optimistic about the UK Fire and Security Sector: in November this rose (slightly) to 76.1%.

However, their views on the prospects for their own business showed a much bigger increase with 55.2% thinking they would be better off, compared with only 46.1% in April.

There has been a slight fall in the number of organisations who think employee numbers will fall. Over one fifth of companies, still think employee numbers will rise over the next 12 months.

In April 25.3% of respondents thought salaries would fall: this has dropped dramatically to 7.6%. Almost a quarter of companies responding felt some increase in salaries was likely.

Perhaps the most significant finding was regarding the factors holding business back. In April 09, 40.8% felt the biggest factor was a lack of confidence in the market. In November this fell to 16.7%. The biggest factor holding business back is now thought to be the slowness in customer decision making, with almost two thirds of responses citing this reason.

Mindful of Disraeli’s “lies, damn lies and statistics” maxim, we will try not to rely too heavily on the survey results, but the overall trend continues to be positive and the “green shoots” may just be climbing just that little bit higher.
